IJmuiden is home to three beaches, which are perfect for active, dynamic water sports and beach sports.– Strand Noordpier (Noordpier Beach)
Located north of the North Sea Canal; most easily accessible via Wijk aan Zee. This beach is suitable for active water sports: the location of the North Pier creates a surge that is highly suitable for windsurfing and kite surfing.
Located near the marina and accessible via the ‘Strand IJmuiden aan Zee’ (‘IJmuiden aan zee’ beach) signs. This beach is suitable for active water sports: the location of the South Pier creates a surge that is highly suitable for windsurfing and kite surfing.
Situated south of the IJmuiden aan Zee beach and most easily accessible via the ‘IJmuiderslag’ signs. The southern section of this beach is a dog run, and due to its width this section is perfect for kite buggying, beach sailing and all-terrain car racing.

The Spaarnwoude Recreation Ground is located between Amsterdam, Haarlem and Velsen. The area, which was designed in the late 1960s as a green buffer from the emerging urbanisation, has since become a popular spot for all modern types of outdoor sports and recreation, attracting around 5.5 million visitors annually. The area covers nearly 3,000 hectares and is an oasis of greenery, nature and tranquillity.
Within its borders, you will find parks, playing fields, a climbing wall, a petting zoo, an educational farm, canoe trails, an adventure land, the indoor ski resort Snowplanet, and a public golf course.
There are many opportunities for cycling, in-line skating and walking, and if you would like to stay longer, you can book accommodation in one of the hotels or holiday homes or on a campsite. Spaarnwoude hosts several major events each year, including Dance Valley and Dutch Valley.
