Tulipomania

Tulipmania or Tulipomania (Dutch names include tulpenmanie, tulpomanie, tulpenwoede, tulpengekte and bollengekte) was a period in de Dutch Golden age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed. At the peak of the tulipmania in February 1637, tulip contracts sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman. It is generally considered the first recorded speculative bubble.

Haarlem Flower City” owes its reputation to the bulb cultivation of which the city until the early twentieth century was the center, though the bulb fields pulled further away from the city during the years. Haarlems’ most famous representatives since 1955 are the flowergirls, which are handing out flowers (daffodils) during events to welcome the guests.

Jopenkerk
“Haarlem beer brewing city” starts in the fourteenth century as Haarlem expands to become one to the most significant beer brewing cities in the Netherlands. Breweries are working all-out and beer is freighted across the Spaarne River in ‘Jopen’ (112 litre barrels). Today, tradition and innovation meet at Jopen; a former church in the centre that has been transformed into a city brewery, grand-cafe and restaurant. In archives recipes of beer from the 17th century has been recovered and ‘Jopen’ will baptise this refreshing beer especially for Keukenhof as ‘Tulpomania Jopenbier’. Frans Hals tulpen
In spring Flower Mania takes hold in the Frans Hals Museum. All year round the museum is full of flowers—in paintings, on tiles, on wallpaper and on other works of art—but at this time of the year we also have the real thing! Magnificent arrangements decorate the rooms and corridors in specially-made flower vases, tulip vases and appropriate antique pots. Through the works of famous painters, visitors can also find out about life in the Golden Age, particularly the role that flowers played. There is an authentic Tulip Book, with work by the renowned Judith Leyster. The highlight of ‘flower mania’ in the museum is the display about the ‘tulip mania’ that seized people in the Golden Age. Paintings and prints tell the story of the incredible boom in the demand for tulip bulbs, when they literally became worth their weight in gold.

The Frans Hals Museum presents this special Flower Mania Experience with a free audio tour in Dutch and English. For more informatie see Frans Hals museum
